It is important for the overall growth and development of the organizations and mitigates them to yield maximum profits. In this assignment, individual reflection has been conducted to comprehend the efficiency of the team members in solving issues and dealing with crisis situation. Also, the theories of management have been understood to get a clear picture of the actual workflow. Some of the real instances have helped in surfacing the practicability of the theories and their impact on the working of the companies.
2.1 Describing the incident
As an intern of the hospitality industry there are events and occasions that everybody has to be a part. These incidents add value to the learning of an individual. There was a grand feast arranged for a Royal family and every intern was given the chance to witness and become a part of the event to learn things more closely. It was one of the most significant incidents that include so much of diversity and a great source of learning things in the context of management. Arranging for the event of the grand feast, there was an issue regarding the availability of raw materials for the feast. The items were found to be of poor quality and some of the necessary ingredients were missing. There was no other alternative option to order afresh and there was a panic situation amongst the staffs and management thinking that the entire reputation of the hotel would be ruined due to the issue.
Following the POLC management practice, the elements for dealing with the issue was constituted accordingly. It was planned that the available lot would be checked for materials that might suit the purpose. At every point of panic optimism is desired because it keeps the mind active and helps in thinking of alternatives without losing hope.
Planning is the only way by which the rest of the process can be conducted to achieve the final intention, as opined by Rosanas (2008). As very less time was available, the usable material from the lot was selected and the task was distributed among three to four staffs to check the cold storage for adequate products. Through this method of organizing time was utilized perfectly and made sure of best quality outcome. The entire range of actions was led appropriately keeping in mind the necessity of the subject. It is important to frame and work in accordance to the ultimate purpose of an incident. Similarly, checking and controlling the entire business allocated to ensure that no other problems arise and the program gets successfully conducted.
Once the event ended well, I was literally satisfied with what and how I have done the things. It was not just about making the event successful, but also the effectiveness of the immediate plan applied. I consider the plan of utilizing the available material and create a Royal platter accordingly as the best way that could have been followed. Ultimately, it is about the taste of the food and not anything else that matters. The success of the plan was evident from the praises that the members of the Royal family constantly exhibited. Another approach could have been to tell the problem to the guests and offer them the normal food of the hotel, but that would have put the reputation of the hotel at stake and hospitability cannot be challenged for a hotel. Also, there would be many questions raised on the quality of the regular menu of the hotel. Any other alternative at the last moment was not possible apart from these two. Thus, I feel whatever I did in managing the incident proved to be effective in completion of the occasion successfully.
In today’s world, business organizations are marked by a number of business activities that help them in accomplishment of their objectives. Strategic thinking has always been an integral part of business management and still holds its importance with modifications according to the changing times. The practice of management differs as per the social, political and economic forces, which influence the overall management and functioning of the business organizations. The classical perspective of management is existing since the nineteenth century and is further sub-divided into roots of scientific management, bureaucratic management and administrative principles, observes Turan (2015). The scientific management was developed by Frederick W. Taylor that emphasized on the scientific changes in management with an intention to improve the productivity of labor force. The concept of scientific management is important in the contemporary times in arranging work based on the analysis of actions required to be undertaken for maximizing productivity, as pointed out by Su (2017). The scientific management even takes care developing the standard for jobs and selection of the workers having the needed capabilities. It also manages tasks of training and supporting the workers and eliminating unnecessary interruptions from the process while aiming at providing wage incentives.
The main advantages of this system lie in its improvisation of contemporary labor system and the way it performs. The careful and analytical selection of workers is done according to the needs of the organization that makes it simpler to utilize the skills and knowledge of the workers of the properly and efficiently, mentioned by Taylor (2004). With proper mechanical training and education the utilization of the resources is completed that contributes to organizational success.
The other side of the coin has its disadvantages, but the good part is that the issues can be mitigated if handled properly and strategically. The system necessitates a rigid and oppressive line of rules and regulations that tends to lead to exploitation of labor, as opined by Grijak and Soleša (2014). The workers might face the pressure of work and the production cycle is so fragmented that they have no knowledge about the commodity that is formed. The control of the workforce is completely in the hands of the authority that keeps a supreme hand over the workers leading to least humane touch.
The management practices are evolving since the days of inception. The necessity of this change is due to the times, which is considerably changing and would change further in the upcoming days. Keeping the trends in concern, the perspective of management has been changed and one such recent development in the field is the human relations movement. The movement is more focused on the satisfaction of employees and understanding and providing for their basic needs. Improved employee satisfaction automatically reflected on the increased productivity of the workers.
The pioneers of the humanistic perspective were Mary Parker Follett and Chester Barnard, who came up with their emphasis on the importance of understanding human behaviors, states Von Kimakowitz et al. (2010). Human behaviors differ from place to place and from time to time. Thus, the needs and attitudes of the employees in the workplace and social interaction processes everything falls under this branch of management.
Humanistic approach considers the employees as an active agent and promotes personal responsibility of individuals. It considers the subjective experience of the individuals and the plan of actions to be undertaken are sequenced accordingly. The Client-Centred Therapy (CCT) supports the employees and attempts to understand their problems while treating them with respect, care and concern, as stated by Melé (2016). This non-directive form of therapy is beneficial for the employees and boosts them in their workplace. However, there is lack of empirical support in this approach. It deals with human behavior making it so positive that the reality of the workplace and its functions strikes hard at times. Lack of rigorous and objective methods do not pushes the individuals further to exhibit their performance as per the best of their abilities, as observed by Melé (2013). Client-Centred Therapy fails to guide and support individuals suffering from complex problems.
