Quality of leadership behaviour at a contemporary hospitality establishment
Hospitality industry is a field which incorporates broad category of service sector such as; lodging, food, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, aviation and various other additional business which facilitate society in their life. Thus, every business is managing qualitative leadership in their workplace to conduct operational activities smoothly. It means that distinct kinds of leading styles, approaches, and ethical beliefs are followed by various leaders who are serving in the hospitality sector. At the same time, there is a difference between contemporary and modern hospitality because now situations are changed as previous due to which leading styles are also reformed from early to new. Marriott hotel is the most successful chain which is having its great presence in the Australian Hospitality industry due to which its change in contemporary leading style to a modern one. Therefore, change of the leading style of Marriott leaders can easily be understood by considering necessary elements such as; comparison between the style of leading from contemporary to modern, use of technology, and many more (Amy Morin, 2020).
Leadership is a practical skill or potentiality of an individual to lead or guide other junior members or entire entities towards corrective directions. Their main objective is to assist others or their teammates to perform a specific job role in a corrective way by considering their necessary elements. For example; allocation of a task is done by leaders to their juniors based on skills, eligibility, experience, talent, and specialized field in order to minimize the probabilities of future errors. Hospitality is a very responsible job role that is performed by corporate firms to facilitate their customers in a very polite and respected manner to acquire their trust, loyalty, long term connection, and many more (Zopiatis and Constanti, 2010). Therefore, the hospitality industry considers several factors before appointing leaders for their business such as; communication skills, management technique, patience level, politeness in their nature, attractive personality, problem resolving skills, etc. Leaders somehow act as role models or directors for subordinates and every junior follows the provision of their coach only. Hence, it’s a responsibility of leaders to ensure that they perform in a very well manner in front of their subordinates to encourage them towards rights directions so that it will be benefitted in professional as well as personal growth. According to Dai and et. Al., (2013) hospitality industry is a very diverse nature due to the presence of distinct aspects in an overall sector such as; innovation, possession, classification or grading system, level of service, leisure facilities, future trends henceforth. Although, there are various hotel industries are present which are engaged in offering standard services to the guest such as; a chain of Marriott hotel is doing a commendable job in the hospitality sector by offering qualitative services. As a result, several other competitors are emerging in the international marketplace to challenge the services of contemporary hotels.
According to the viewpoint of Kara and et., Al., (2013) leaders of the contemporary hospitality industry are performing multiple job roles while working in a hotel such as; leader of marketing is liable to promote sales by performing distinct promotional activities. But, in the contemporary hospitality sector, marketing managers also handle consumers before service, after service, assist while entering into a hotel, ask for queries if any, and many more. This shows that leaders are surrounded by multiple obligations as they act as a representative of an organization in front of customers by explaining the major strength of an enterprise to maintain long term relationships with them. Simply, leadership is the potential of an individual to influence the behavior of others by motivational, attractive, and unique phrases. At the same time, they perform their major activities of leadership by following certain theories or approach which is further known as a leadership style of a specific leader. For example; autocratic and democratic is a kind of leading style from which the leader of HR follows the democratic moves whereas the leader of finance uses autocratic style to deal with their teammates. Therefore, this shows the difference between two leaders as both of them are following distinct styles to deal with their subordinates. According to the perceptive of Bruna Maritnuzzi, (2019) there are some major styles of leadership which are much better than others as it helps leaders to handle the complex situations in a more suitable way. Thus, the author has stated seven primary leadership styles are discussed as follows-
Autocratic style- According to this approach, leaders are following ordering statements like; “Do as I say” which means that he/she is enforcing other teammates to follow their rules, regulations, and directions without asking further queries. In this style, the head of the team believes that his/her decision is right and the leader is the only smartest person in an entire team whereas others are liable to follow the order instead of rejecting it. This approach is also known as the command-and-control theory of the leading team which is mostly followed in the contemporary hospitality industry. For example; Marriott hotel is a very longest chain of American multinational diversified hospitality organization which was founded in almost 1927. This shows that chain of Marriott is coming from the last several decades and getting succeeded in grabbing the attention of domestic as well as an international marketplace with their creative skills and workforce support. Somehow, leaders are so commanding in Marriott due to which every employee gets motivated towards set goals and perform their job role instantly in a proper manner. But, in today’s market, this leadership style is not followed because it’s a very controlling mode that is not accepted by current employees because every individual is too conscious of their self-respect (Law and et. Al., 2011).
Authoritative style- It’s a kind of visionary leading style that uses the phrase “Follow me” where leaders are very much confident towards their direction or path and enforce followers to follow the same path. As compared to autocratic leadership style, authoritative one consume maximum time to explain their vision without just issuing the orders as in this mode, subordinates are allowed to select and autonomy on how to attain similar objectives (Ogbeide and Harrington, 2011).
Pacesetting style- In this leadership style, the most important phrase which is used by leaders is “Do as I do”. Leaders who follow this mode set a specific high bar and push their teammates to run fast to finish the set line without mentioning any goal. This kind of leadership style is followed by Marriott leaders with laborers daily just to attain an increase in their productivity level.
Democratic leadership- One of the most famous approaches to the current phase but minimal use in the contemporary hospitality industry because this style uses phrases like “What do you think”? It means that every information is going to share with employees in order to acquire their opinion towards the specific subject matter. Mainly, every staff member is taking part in the decision-making process as leaders ask their consent too before approving any plan for goal attainment. This style is used by leaders of modern Marriott where employees get an opportunity to express their opinions because of this help in maintaining a positive relationship with them (Wakabi, 2016).
Coaching style- Leaders who followed this framework believe that they are doing efforts to unlocking the potential of individuals. An employee is seen as a reservoir of talent to developed by taking necessary initiatives. This kind of leader always opens their hearts and doors for their juniors to enhance their capability by identifying their hidden talent and motivate them towards own ability.
Affiliative style- In this approach, “people come first” is a kind of phrase which is used while dealing with juniors because leaders believe in making a close relationship with employees and maintain personal contact. According to this style, leaders are going to pay full attention to their subordinates and help them via emotional support (Wang, 2016).
Laissez-Faire style- It's opposite of autocratic style in which leaders are absent in performing their job roles and give free environment to their teammates without doing any efforts. As per this leading style, leaders easily trust any member without knowing the facts about it.
Consequently, it has been understood that leadership approaches are a kind of norms, provisions, and ethical belief which are followed by leaders of Marriott according to their understanding or situations while handling their teammates (Wang and et. Al., 2014). However, The proper leadership program is required to sustain in the long run.
