BUSINESS RESEARCH: BIG DATA IN BUSINESS ORGANISATION
Big data and the application of big data science deals with the accumulation of identical or nonidentical data or information and the analysing of those collected valuable data. This specific section of the entire assignment contains several objectives that relate to the big data and its application by a various organisations. The three organisations that wisely utilise big data and its applications in their business operations include Amazon, Netflix, and American Express. This research proposal also comprises of various important sections related to the big data and the application of big data by numerous organisation. The research proposal also consists of various issues regarding the big data and the application of big data by the organisations. The specific research proposal helps in the findings of various loopholes associated with the big data. The various future scopes in the use of big data and the several tools of big data also highlighted.
2. Project Objective
● To evaluate the significance of big data in business environment
● To assess the applications of big data and the utilisation of big data by various organisations
● To analyse different theories and models of big data
● To examine the impact of big data on organisational performance in present future
3. Project Scope
Big data considers the most growing analysing tool in the globe. Organisations such as Amazon, Netflix and American Express already cultivating the best from the big data application, according to Kwon et al. (2014, p.387), the future scope for this particular unique analysing tool seems glorious in context to an application in the business application by several types of business organisations. Apart from these, three prime organisations, utilisation of big data can observe in various corporate giants and that includes Deloitte, PWC, Starbucks, Tesco Plc and many other organisations. The application of big data will definitely provide major assistance towards the various organisations in creating an organised process in terms of business operations. [Refer to Appendix 1 and 2]
4. Literature Review
4.1 Theories and models related to big data
The utilisation of models and theories related to the big data and the application of big data tools in the various business operations of the organisation are highlighted. The various inductive theory of development related to the big data and its application comprises of a continuum of induction, a continuum of generalisation and lexicon and level of theory. According to Gunasekaran et al. (2017, p.308), three important models and theories of big data help in the understanding of the application of big data and utilisation of tools of big data by a various organisation. The continuum of induction theory associated with the ground theory method, where the accumulation of the hefty amount of data and proper analysing of those accumulated data seems necessary. The grounded theory method or theory utilises the existing theory related to big data and assists in the explaining of the empirical contexts regarding the knowledge of big data and its application (Sas.com, 2017).
The continuum of generalisation and the level of theory and lexicon deals with the substantive and formal theory related to the application of big data. As per Grimmer (2015, p.80), the utilisation of the tools and software of big data renders in the growth for the various organisations and that uses this particular analytical tool (Marz and Warren, 2015). The concept of big data associated with the accumulation of raw data or information regarding the customer and the services intend towards the customers by the organisations.
4.2 Justification of literature problems
The concept of big data across the globe seems very acceptable but there remain various loopholes or drawbacks regarding the utilisation of this analytical tool known as big data. The big data and its application by several organisations always provide the organisation such as Amazon, Netflix, American Express, PWC and Deloitte and much more with growth in terms of revenue. The big data application comprises of two major drawbacks and that includes security issue and the cost of the analytical tools such as life, Apache Hadoop, and MongoDB. The major concern associated with the security systems of the database and the initial developing cost and upgradation cost remains very high. [Refer to Appendix 3]
4.3 Literature gap and opportunities
The research study comprises of various useful information regarding the big data and the application of big data in the present business operations. The research paper provides ample of data regarding the big data and its application but still their remains few loopholes related to the research proposal. The information regarding the several theories and models related to the big data including the SP theory of intelligence need more research and study. This approach definitely provides a lot of aid or help in the development and understanding regarding the particular research. There comprises of various opportunities regarding the big data and the application of big data in future days. The research on the several theories and models and that includes the SP theory of intelligence and the inductive theory of development needs more workout and development.
H0: Implementation of big data significantly affects organisational performance.
H1: Implementation of big data does not significantly affect organisational performance
5. Research Questions/Hypothesis
This section is going to reflect research questions based on the research objectives in a proper manner.
Why is the use of big data significant in the present business world?
- Secondary Questions
What are the applications of big data in order to enhance organisational performance?
How to analyse different theories and models of big data?
What are the impacts of big data on organisational performance in present future?
6. Research Design and Methodology (Quantitative research)
The research design and methodology assist in the understanding of the various ways by which a researcher systematically conducts a specific study and it aids in the findings and understanding of the perfect approach and design related to the particular topic.
6.1 Research onion
Figure 1: Research onion
(Source: Saunders et al. 2009, p.52)
A particular research can be considered as a conceptual model of the entire research methodology. The proper conceptual model assists in conducting each step of the research associated with the big data and its applications by various organisations. The several layers of the research onion will assist and guide the researcher in finding out the appropriate path and helping the researcher in applying specific techniques to conduct the particular research.
6.2 Research philosophy
The researcher has collected various data or information regarding the big data and the analysing of the tools of the big data. The research has moved from post-positivism and now focuses on the acceptance of background, theories, knowledge, and values. The accumulation of various theories and information by the researcher, regarding the big data and the applications of big data provides a lot of assistance.
6.3 Research approach
The research approach comprises of two important types of approaches and that includes the inductive and deductive types of approaches. As per McAbee et al. (2017, p.277), the inductive type of approach comprises of various data collection method, observations, data analysis and building of theory. The deductive style of approach comprises of accumulating data or information from existing theories and with the assistance of data analysis.
In this specific study, the researcher utilises the inductive approach style, where the researcher was able to cultivate and accumulate lots of data or information regarding the specific topic. The researcher will make positive and specific observations regarding the data or information collected. The researcher will analyse the patterns and will formulate the necessary findings regarding the particular research paper.
6.4 Research design
The researcher chosen the descriptive design style in this particular research and that contains the data or information regarding the big data and the application of big data by various organisations. The researcher will gain knowledge by utilising the descriptive design pattern and it will help in the findings of the study and the various objectives of the study. The particular type of research design also helps the researcher to get the solutions for the various research question related to the specific chosen topic.
6.5 Sampling method
The researcher will able to understand and analyse the data or information collected regarding the particular topic. The sampling method utilised by the researcher comprises of a quantitative method and that includes the collection of data or information from various journals, websites, and existing research paper. The sampling method is of two types that is probability sampling and non-probability sampling. The sampling method will assist the researcher in finding out the exact number of participants or samples in the research study.
6.6 Data collection method
The researcher will apply the quantitative method of research in the data collection method. The researcher will also accumulate data or information from the secondary sources of data such as internet, online journals, websites and that also includes websites of the organisation. researcher will also accumulate data from important articles and related books.
7. Research Limitations
In this research, researcher has made several assumptions aiming to create a relevant scope for depth research. However, this particular research might enhance it there is no borderline about time and cost. Time and cost are two most primary limitations of the research that resist the research to proceed with Primary data collection method. Apart from that, the research reveals the application of big data and a flawless way that might apply for multinational organisations. Amazon, American Express, Netflix are selected in order to picturise the significance of big data in present future. On the other hand, because of cost limitation researcher is unable to conduct primary research by considering many other business organisations.
