Brace up your smile
A smile is a first thing that endears to a person even before the interaction and leaves a lasting first impression. It’s one of the very few things that determine how long the conversation will last. To have a real attractive healthy smile that gets noticed by all is a dream of everyone. It makes us feel good about ourselves and improves our self-confidence. Some people have crooked teeth which are very prone to tooth decay and gum diseases. We all want even, straight teeth that do justice to our cheery smile. Straightening your teeth to improve your smile and general health shouldn’t be taken lightly. It should be on the front burner of your overall physical health and hygiene, as it’s one of the first thing people see on your face. It’s best to start as early as possible to give yourself a healthy and enviable set of teeth. Teeth straightening works best when the teeth and jaw are still growing, but treatment won’t usually begin until most adult teeth have come through. This means the ideal age to start wearing dental braces is usually around 10-14.However, braces can still be effective at any age.
Dental braces are now widely used as an effective tool to straighten teeth. The dental braces have been a boon for millions of people longing to have a beautiful smile. A large number of people who get braces are kids and teenagers who want to improve their appearance by straightening their crooked teeth. Braces are more than just a simple cosmetic tool.
Treatment plans are customized for each patient, most wear their braces from one to three years, depending on what conditions need correcting. Although a little discomfort is expected during treatment, today's braces are more comfortable than ever before. Newer materials apply a constant, gentle force to move teeth and usually require fewer adjustments. There is a comprehensive range of braces available these days and the choice is not limited to one or two options only. Types of braces include:
Metal braces/Traditional braces - These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word "braces." However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious "metal-mouth" braces that many adults remember. Plus, new heat-activated arch wires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past. It is least expensive type; colored bands give kids a chance to express themselves.
Invisalign – These braces consists of a series of 18 to 30 custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks. Almost invisible, you can eat and drink whatever they want.
Lingual braces - These are virtually invisible braces and are worn behind the teeth. The best option if you don’t want anyone to get to know that you are wearing braces.
Damon Braces - This is an advanced orthodontic system of straightening the teeth. The demon braces produces results of straightening the teeth in much shorter time as compared to the other types.
Insignia Braces - This treatment is of a very high quality and works on a one size fits all approach. The Insignia Braces are ideal for everyone of any age.
Interceptive Braces - This is a special treatment for the children. The ideal time for its assessment in between 7-9 years of age so that some specific problems are intercepted early and are treated before they are fully developed.
Fitted with new plastics, metals and ceramics, your mouth will be unused to the feel of the braces. This may also change the way you brush and floss – just be sure that you devote the same care to your teeth, to avoid staining and tooth decay! Starchy foods, such as potato chips, can also stick to teeth for long periods of time and cause tooth decay. There are foods that can loosen, break or bend wires and bands when you are wearing braces. Avoid hard foods such as nuts and hard cookies. Foods such as apples and carrots should be chopped into small pieces before eating to reduce the stress on your braces. Avoid sticky foods such as caramels, toffees, muesli or fruit bars. No chewing gum! No chewing ice!
Orthodontists suggest cleaning your teeth after every meal, so that food particles don’t get stuck in areas of the braces. Using a high fluoride mouthwash in addition to your daily brushing and flossing can be very helpful in reaching all areas that your toothbrush may have missed.
AFTER all, our teeth are one of our most personal assets and it is important to have them the way we would like.
