Assessment task details and instructions

You are required to simulate a small network. You must connect the network devices according to the topology above and then apply suitable configurations to ensure full connectivity between subnets. The deliverables required from this assessment are:

Simulation Packet Tracer File (Due Friday May 15th, 2020 by 16:00)

On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding.

 •The basic principles of network communication and its application to moderninformation transfer.  The layered reference models and the function of protocols and addressing schemes      within             these models. 

The operation of Ethernet based hardware and its physical limitations.

 The issues with interconnecting different items of network hardware.

Transferable/Key Skills and other Attributes. 

        Able to use simulation tools to plan and test a network. 

        Able to identify and interconnect computer and network hardware to produce a functioning

      network.Information Technology: Using several information sources for research

        Critical Analysis: Using a specification to make an informed design choice


The aim of this module is to develop both the practical and conceptual skills and knowledge that are fundamental to an understanding of modern computer networking. This is done by exploring the operation of one on the most common network technologies, Ethernet, and by looking at the operation of protocols and addressing at each of the four ISO model layers that have a direct connection to network systems

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria are listed at the end of this document. In Year Retrieval Scheme This assessment is not eligible for in year retrieval.


If you fail your assessment, and are eligible for reassessment, you will need to resubmit on or before 07/08/2020. For students with accepted personal mitigating circumstances, this will be your replacement assessment attempt.

This assessment will be an individual research and design exercise different to the original group project as it is not possible to perform the group work over the summer vacation period.
