## Foldable bridge

This assessment covers learning outcomes 1, 4 and 5 for this module and the standard University assessment criteria for this level apply.

### Foldable bridge

A design report based on a project involving a realistic mechanical design of foldable bridge. The foldable bridge must ensure that 100 persons with average weight of 70 kg can cross the bridge safely. The foldable bridge must be across the bridgeless river, and the length and width of foldable bridge must be at least 40 m and 5 m. The bridge must be easy to fold and unfold. The main objective of this design project is to demonstrate a comprehensive and critical understanding of individual elements of modern mechanical design concepts and methods. You will not be required to build the system. The length of the design report 2000 words or equivalent, and the report should include:

### Executive Summary/Abstract (5%)

The abstract should be a summary of the overall project, including the problem statement, the general idea of how you solved the problem, and a concise statement of your solution.

### Introduction/Background (15%)

Assume the reader is not familiar with this topic, but has an engineering background so that he/she can understand the technical analysis. Avoid jargon; if you use acronyms, use the full name the first time you refer to it and show the acronym in parentheses.

### Problem Definition (Design constraints and requirements) (15%)

Discuss how to approach the problem. Include a list of specifications as appropriate. Remember to include constraints; Convert the customer needs into engineering specifications.

### Final Design/Results (25%)

This section is where you describe your design in detail. Begin with an overview of your design and follow this with sections describing particular sub-systems and features. Make drawings, tables, graphs, and pictures that illustrate the final results. Explain the working principle of your design. (Be concise and complete, but include sufficient details so that your design can be reproduced)

### Performance/testing (25%)

In this section discuss how you tested your design and assessed its performance. Point out any weaknesses or limitations to your design. Evaluation could be through experimental testing of a physical prototype, through testing of a virtual prototype (computer model and simulation) or/and by analysis and hand calculations.

### Conclusions / Future recommendations (5%)

Describe your results briefly and draw any conclusions. Do not simply restate the abstract. Is your design an improvement over an existing design? Could you make recommendations should the analysis need to be repeated in the future? The conclusion should be the final thought that you want the reader of your report to come away with.
