Ø  You are required to fill in, sign the academic honesty statement, and attach the assessment cover sheet to the front of your submitted assessment. Ensure you sign the receipt form when submitting.

Ø  Plagiarism: Failure to adhere to the plagiarism policy, as outlined on the assessment cover sheet, will lead to the non-acceptance of the submitted assessment, as well as a written warning for breach of the policy.

Performance objective and Assessment description

Students should demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to draft, plan and implement a diversity policy. This assessment item requires students to research and analyse diversity requirements and develop a diversity policy for an organisation of their choice.

Instructions for the student

Assessment 1 is compulsory. You are required to achieve competency in all questions to be deemed Competent for this unit.

 

The following assessment task must be completed to enable the learner to demonstrate the skills required for this unit of competency. To complete this task, you can use any organisation or your own workplace if you are able to access all of the documents and conduct all of the activities required. You are required to draft a diversity policy and plan to implement it, as well as plan for how you will promote the new diversity policy across the organisation. You may access diversity policies from other organisations and look at how this policy is working.

 

QUESTIONS

 

1.            Analyse the existing HR policy (or equivalent) of your chosen organisation in order to identify existing diversity practices.

2.            a) Identify and explain the business operations that can be linked to diversity in your organisation.

               b) Research 2 diversity policies from similar organisations and review against the diversity policy of your organisation.

3.            Identify the potential benefits of diversity in the workplace, and discuss the fit with your organisation’s business objectives. You need to analyse the business planning and strategic documents to determine this.

4.            Identify:

a)            At least two internal and two external sources from which you could gather information about the business practices and its policy on diversity.

b)            Who your key stakeholders are, and how you will consult with them during research and development of a new diversity policy, and during implementation and review stages.

c)            Legislation, codes of practice and national standards and outline how they apply to development of diversity policy.

5.            Based on the consultation with stakeholders and your research of other existing practices and policy/procedures, develop a diversity policy for your organisation. You must include details of your implementation strategy and how the policy will be monitored and reviewed. Follow the format below:

DIVERSITY POLICY

Diversity Vision: (State how you will use a diverse workforce as your organisation’s advantage for further operations)

Recruitment: (State how you will recruit people from diverse backgrounds)

Career development and promotion: (State how you will develop and promote your employees)

Community programmes: (State how you will handle cultural stereotypes within the organisation)

Diversity bodies: (State who will be responsible for forming a diversity committee)

Diversity practices: (State how you will conduct diversity training and what the training includes)

Diversity policy monitoring and review: (State how the policy will be monitored and reviewed, resulting in recommended changes)

 

6.            Based on recommendations for improvement, describe how you will implement, evaluate and change the diversity policy. You should specify what the recommendations were, who you consulted with and what your changes are.

7.            Discuss how you are going to:

               a)            explain, communicate and promote the policy across the organisation to key stakeholders.

b)            identify any intended and unintended impacts of the policy implementation and how you will measure the impact of the new policy on the organisation.

c)            monitor performance of staff and business activities to ensure an effective implementation of the policy

This assessment is comprised of knowledge based questions that ensure you demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply your learning to your answers through personal examples.
